Martial Arts Quotes

"The black belt is not a mark or symbol of the end of the journey to ones mastery of the arts;
rather it is the mark that one is done packing for their journey and may now take the first step
in their true journey. This a journey which can not ever be complete, only traveled..."

Judo Tournament

After watching a Judo tournament, Kano reportedly gathered the participants together and told them:

You fought like young bulls locking horns; there was nothing refined or dignified about any of the techniques I witnessed today. I never taught anyone to do Kodokan Judo like that. If all you can think about is winning through brute strength, that will be the end of Kodokan Judo.

KYU-SHIN-DO AND ZEN JUDO

KENSHIRO ABBE, THE KYU-SHIN-DO AND ZEN JUDO
By Keo Cavalcanti, 6th Dan Zen Judo, hcavalca@richmond.edu

Most Judokas (judo practioners) are familiar with Dr. Jigoro Kano, the founder of modern Judo and the Kodokan, the organization he created to spread his art around the world. What is not common knowledge, however, is that for most of the first half of the 20th Century there were two major Martial Arts organizations in Japan who trained Judokas and awarded Judo ranks. One was Kano''s Kodokan. The other was the Butokukai.

Young people from around East Hampshire were treated to a taste of Zen Judo at Horndean Technology College on Thursday (16 February).

The session run by Horndean Zen Judo Club was part of the Get Activ8d scheme from East Hampshire District Council, which gives young people opportunities to try out new sports during school holidays.

The 13 new judoka (students) were taught the basics of how to fall safely, how to throw someone and how to pin them to the mat (groundholds). They also had a chance to demonstrate what they had learned to the parents watching with a session of randori (free practise).

The session ended with an impressive demonstration of judo skills from Matthew (Black Belt 1st Dan) and Chris (Brown Belt 1st Kyu).

Sensei of the club, Tracy Collins (5th Dan) said: It was great to see so many people on the mat enjoying themselves. If the session has sparked an enthusiasm for judo in just one of them, I’m really pleased.

Horndean Zen Judo Club runs sessions in the gym at Horndean Technology College on Thursdays from 6.30pm to 8pm during school term time. Sessions are £4 and the first lesson is free.

There are also clubs in Bognor, Portsmouth and Petersfield. For more information go to www.zenjudo.co.uk
